How to Get Rid of Woodpeckers in Trees
Woodpeckers damage trees and homes as they drill in search of insects for food and to create nesting holes. In the spring, the birds peck on trees to make a drumming noise to establish territory and attract a mate. Woodpeckers do not frighten easily, especially after they have already staked out territory. You may need to try several approaches individually or in unison before the birds leave. Does this Spark an idea?

The aluminum foil strips wave easily even in a slight breeze, and the reflecting light should discourages woodpeckers. You will need to experiment with quantities to determine how many are needed to deter the birds.

3
Mount a plastic owl on a tree limb. The owl must be moved periodically for it to be effective.

Tips & Warnings
Some birding retailers also sell CD players with a motion sensor. These players will turn on the recorded sounds when the sensor detects movement.
Woodpeckers are a protected species under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Do not use sticky substances to trap them. These products can coat their plumage with tacky material that inhibits flight, and interfere with the cooling and heating properties of their feathers.
