How to Make a Coaster With Fabric
Homemade coasters are a unique and thoughtful gift. They’re easy to make with a little handpicked fabric or even spare fabric you have around your home. Homemade fabric coasters make suitable small gifts for housewarming presents for friends and family or for a thank you gift for a co-worker or as a welcoming gift to a new neighbor. A handmade gift, like a fabric coaster that you create from scratch, is an excellent way to express your own creativity.

1
Select a pattern or color of cotton fabric that you like, or use scrap fabric left over from other projects that you have lying around your house. Measure eight 5-by-5-inch squares and cut them out of the fabric. Understand that you will use two squares for each coaster so if you want to make more than four coasters, cut the extra fabric squares.
-
2
Cut eight 4-1/2-by-4-1/2-inch squares from a piece of white fleece and another eight 4-1/2-by-4-1/2-inch squares from a piece of double-sided fusible web material.

3
Lay the fabric squares in pairs so that their right or patterned sides face each other. Lay a piece of fusible web material on top of each square. Set a fleece square on top of that. Press the fleece down with your palm, securing each piece of fleece to each fabric square.
-
4
Iron the fleece down to the fabric squares by using the heat from the iron to activate the adhesive properties of the double-sided fusible web material.
-
5
Load a complementary color of thread into your sewing machine. Measure 1/4 inch in from the edges of the fabric square pairs and sew them together with a straight stitch. Leave a 2-inch opening in the center of one side of each square pair.
-
6
Turn the fabric square pairs right side out. Iron them flat with a warm iron.
-
7
Sew the 2-inch opening shut. If you are presenting the coasters as a gift, bundle them together and wrap them up with a strand of organza ribbon in a complementary color.
