How to Bleed an Air-Over-Hydraulic Ram
An air-over-hydraulic ram is a tool that is operated by using hydraulic pressure to activate a cylinder. A common type of air-over-hydraulic ram that you may use is a log splitter. Regular maintenance for your machine includes adding hydraulic oil. One step with this process involves bleeding the air from the oil reservoir for the hydraulic cylinder. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Plastic oil container
- Plastic spout
- Hydraulic oil
- Wrench
- Rag

1
Move the cylinder of the ram to its “closed” position and remove the oil fill plug. Pry the plug out out by using the flat-head screwdriver. Put the fill plug in a safe location so it does not get lost.
-
2
Fill a plastic oil container with hydraulic oil and attach a plastic spout. Make sure this plastic container is clean of any oil residue.
-
-
3
Pour the hydraulic oil in the plastic container into the fill hole for the hydraulic cylinder. Add hydraulic oil to the cylinder until it begins to leak from the fill hole.
-
4
Insert the fill plug back into the hole and extend the cylinder to it furthest position. Bleed the hydraulic ram by opening the bleeder valve. If a bleeder release valve is not present, there may be a nut you can loosen with a wrench.
-
5
Close the bleeder valve or tighten the nut when hydraulic oil begins to leak from the valve.
-
6
Verify the hydraulic oil level in the cylinder. Add additional oil if the level is still low. Clean any excess hydraulic oil from your ram with a rag.
