How to Make a Pit Cart

A pit cart takes its name from the portable toolbox that race car drivers maneuver in their service area, often call the pit, during a race. You can make your own pit cart by cannibalizing parts from an end table assembly kit. Basic tools and a few other supplies that can be acquired from a hardware store will be needed as well. Instructions

    • 1

      Place a tarp on the floor. Place the parts of the do it yourself end table on the tarp. Follow the directions of the included manual to assemble the shelves of the end table with the Torx screwdriver, nails and hammer. Follow the directions to assemble the end table the shelves will go into, using the Torx screwdriver, nails and hammer.

      Place the shelves face down on the tarp. Shake the can of waterproofing spray for 20 seconds. Spray each of the shelves on all sides. Let the spray dry for the amount of time specified on the spray can. Apply another coat of spray.

      Place the shelves right side up on the tarp. Shake the waterproofing spray can for 20 seconds. Spray the inside of each shelf and its edges. Let the spray dry for the needed amount of time before applying another coat.

      Apply bonding glue to the inside of each shelf. Place sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil on each shelf. Let the glue set overnight. Apply the glue to the foil on each shelf and place another layer of foil on top. Let the glue set overnight.

      Turn the shelves over. Shake the can of sliver paint for 10 seconds. Spray each shelf with the paint. Let the paint dry for the time specified on the can and then apply another coat.

      Place the end table that the shelves go into on the tarp face down. Shake the waterproofing spray can for 20 seconds. Spray the end table. Let the spray dry for the needed amount of time before applying another coat. Shake the can of sliver paint for 10 seconds. Spray the end table with the paint. Let the paint dry for the time specified on the can and then apply another coat.

      Drill holes in each corner of the bottom of the end table with a portable drill. Insert the rod attached to a service wheel into each hole. Turn the end table right side up. Place a washer over each rod inside the end table. Screw a nut on each rod. Tighten each nut with a pliers.

      Shake the waterproofing spray can for 20 seconds and spray the top of the end table. Let the spray dry for the needed amount of time before applying another coat. Place the shelves halfway inside the end table. Place tools inside the shelves.

      Place a sheet of foam rubber on the top of your pit cart. Cut around the foam rubber that overlaps the top with a utility knife. Apply bonding glue to the top of the pit cart. Place the foam rubber on the top of the cart and press it against the glue. Hold the foam rubber against the top for 2 minutes. Let the glue set overnight.

      Place the basket unit on one side of the pit cart. Make a dot through the two holes at the end of the two tabs attached to the basket with a pencil. Drill a hole through the two holes with the portable drill. Place the tabs against the side of the cart so the holes line up. Run a bolt through each hole. Screw a nut on the end of each bolt from inside the cart. Tighten each nut with a pliers. Place tools inside on the shelves.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear work gloves when handling the bonding glue since it is so strong it can pull off layers of skin.
