How to Mount a Snowplow to an ATV

ATVs are extremely useful in the case of snow emergencies.

A snow plow is not a standard piece of equipment for an ATV. ATVs generally fall into two categories: sport utility and sport. A sport model ATV is one designed for racing. The sport utility ATV is designed for working. Heavy-duty sport utility ATVs can pull a trailer or plow snow. They have a higher ground clearance and a more powerful, slower engine than the sport models. A mounting plate needs to be permanently installed on the ATV prior to the actual snow plow installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill with 3/8 inch bit
  • Ratchet with 1/2-inch socket and 9/16-inch socket
  • 7/16-inch wrench
  • 9/16-inch srench
  • Phillips-head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Install the plow mount to the underside of the front of the ATV with the two U-bolts provided with the installation kit. Hand tighten the 5/16-inch nuts. Pull the mount back to the farthest position and then fully tighten the nuts with a wrench.

    • 2

Drill a hole through the skid plate if your ATV model requires it, and secure the plow mount with the second set of U-bolts provided with the installation kit. You can secure the U-bolts around the frame with the existing holes on the Kawasaki Prairie 360.

    • 3

Torque to 20 feet per pound all bolts used to attach the U-bolts on the front and rear, left and right sides of the plow mount with a 5/16-inch socket wrench. The plow mount will remain attached to the ATV but the plow can be removed after use.

    • 4

Lift the end of the tube assembly slid into position under the ATV so the holes in the tube wings line up with the 3/8-inch holes in the rear of the plow mount. Insert both 3/8-inch pins provided and hook the retaining clips on the ends of the pins to mount the plow to the ATV.

    • 5

Attach the J-bolt bracket to the center hole in the plow cross member using a 3/8-inch bolt that is 1 inch long. Mount the bracket on the blade side of the crossmember with the side flanges parallel to the ground and secure with a 3/8-inch nylock nut. Torque the nut and bolt to 20 feet per pound.

    • 6

Run the winch cable over the roller fairlead to the J-bolt bracket. Hook the loop of the winch cable over the J-bolt. Slide the threaded end of the J-bolt into the slotted hole in the J-bracket. Secure the J-bolt with a 1/4-inch nylock nut. Tighten the nut until the winch cable is taut. The J-bolt will break and release the cable if you try to lift something too heavy with the plow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not raise the top of the plow blade above the headlights of the ATV.
