How to Connect a Friendship Bracelet

Give a bracelet as a symbol of friendship.

Friendship bracelets are braided bracelets created with thin but durable cording and given as gifts, often by children. The bracelets are closed in a specific way to keep the bracelet on the recipient as long as possible to symbolize friendship. Satin rat-tail cording is available in numerous colors. Use three strands of the same color or ask your recipient to select three favorite, but complimentary, colors to create a customized gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the recipient's wrist with a fabric measuring tape. Add 3 inches to the measurement. Cut three lengths of satin rat-tail that equal that total measurement.

    • 2

Hold the ends of the rat-tail together in your hand. Twist them around and create a knot about 1 inch from the end. Loose strands will stick out above the knot. Tape those ends to the table to hold the base while you braid.

    • 3

Braid the bracelet as you would braid hair. Cross the left strand over the middle. Cross the right strand over the middle. Repeat and tighten as you proceed with the braid. Stop braiding at a point about 1 1/2 inches from the end. Tie a knot at the end of the braid. This leaves loose ends above the knot.

    • 4

Place the bracelet around the wrist of the recipient. Tie the loose ends together to create a knot, making the fit tight but comfortable. Snip off excess rat-tail.
