Ski masks make great holiday gifts, particularly for friends and family who enjoy winter sports. Through masks and beanies share essentially the same pattern, knowing how to crochet an eye hole is imperative in converting a beanie to a mask. The masks are surprisingly easy to create if you understand basic crocheting techniques including chains, single, double, slip and decrease stitches. Begin the mask like you would a beanie, using a pattern you're already comfortable with, and add an eye hole to the second 1/3 of the hat using the button hole method.

  • Beanie pattern
  • Measuring tape
  • 2 crochet needles
  • Yarn
  • Hook
  • Scissors

Instructions

      Measure 7 inches wide across the front of the started beanie. Mark the 7 inch segment by inserting one crochet needle at each end. Count and note the number of stitches between the first and second marker.

      Continue crocheting around the hat as normal, until you reach the first crochet needle marker. Begin the viewing hole using the button hole method by chaining the number of stitches previously noted between the markers. Continue crocheting around the hat as normal to finish the row.

      Crochet the remaining rows of the mask as normal, until you reach the desired length.
