A neck pillow cushions your head on long car or plane trips.

Traveling for long distances in a car can wreak havoc on your body. A travel neck pillow can make you more comfortable. The neck pillow must stay in place to provide the most benefit, but they don’t come equipped with devices to attach them to the seat headrest. Remedy that with a few inexpensive supplies and a little time.

Things You'll Need

  • Ruler
  • Seam binding or ribbon
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Pillow with Ties

    • 1

Measure the distance between the posts in your headrest. An average spread is between 6 and 7 inches, but your vehicle may measure differently.

    • 2

Cut two 16-inch lengths of sturdy ribbon or seam binding for ties. Match the color to your neck pillow. Find the center point on the outside curve of your neck pillow and mark it with tailor’s chalk. Divide the spread of your headrest posts in half and measure that length from either side of your center mark. These marks indicate where you will attach your ties.

    • 3

Fold the ties in half and pin the fold to the appropriate marks. Sew the ties by hand to the pillow using a doubled thread at the seam line. A curved needle often works best.

    • 4

Fold the ends of the each tie under 1/4 inch. Fold under another 1/4 inch and pin into place to create a small hem. Sew the hem into place.

    Hook and Loop Attachment

    • 5

      Complete Step 1 above.

    • 6

Cut a 4-inch strip of nonadhesive 1/2-inch-wide hook and loop tape. Continue with the rest of Step 2 above.

    • 7

Separate the loops tape from the hooks tape. Pin the loops sides with the loops facing down toward the pillow and the end pointing toward the center of the pillow. Pin the hook side abutting the loop side with the hooks facing up and the other end pointing toward the curved segment of the pillow.

    • 8

Sew each piece of tape into place separately. This makes a more secure seam.

    • 9

Store the pillow with the hook and loop strips fastened together so your hook side will pick up less debris.
