How to Make Rows With Your Shoelaces
Instead of lacing your shoes in the traditional criss-cross style, make rows with your shoelaces using a bar lacing technique. Bar lacing creates the appearance of horizontal rows running between the eyelets of your shoes, with no crossed strands over the tongue. According to Ian Fieggen at Ian's Shoelace Site, bar lacing relieves pressure on the top of your foot. Making rows with your shoelaces may be more comfortable if your feet tend to swell throughout the day.

1
Insert the two ends of the shoelace into the top two eyelets of the shoe, the ones closest to the toe. Thread from the top of the shoe toward the tongue. Pull gently on the laces to make them even on both sides and create the first bar.

2
Bring the lace on the outside edge of the shoe under the eyelets on its side. Do not cross the lace over to the inside edge, as you normally would. Skip the second eyelet and bring the lace up through the third eyelet.

3
Bring the lace on the inside edge of the shoe up through the second eyelet. Pull it across to the other side and thread it downward through the second eyelet, creating the second bar. You will now have two lace ends on the outside edge of the shoe.

4
Pull the first lace across to the inside of the shoe. Thread it downward through the third eyelet, creating the third bar.
-
5
Continue lacing in this manner, skipping two eyelets on one side and one on the other, until you have filled all the eyelets on the shoe.
-
6
Tuck the excess laces under a removable sole, if your shoes have one. Other options include crossing the laces under the tongue before tying them on top of the shoe or cutting of the excess with scissors.
