How to Install Animated Fire in GIMP

The free, open-source GIMP image software is primarily intended for creating and editing still digital images; it can also, however, render simple animations. The Animated Fire script for GIMP, for example, creates a flickering, fiery background for your images. The download package for this plug-in contains two types of files: preset files and the Animated Fire script itself. To install Animated Fire in GIMP, you'll need to extract the files in the download package to the correct locations on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Close GIMP if it's open. Navigate to the Animated Fire download page on deviantART. Click the "Download" link; save the file to your browser's download directory.

    • 2

Click the "Start" button and select "Computer." Navigate to your browser's download directory. Double-click the downloaded Animated Fire file to open the archive.

    • 3

Click "Extract all files." Check the box next to "Show extracted files when complete." Type "C:\Animated Fire" into the text field and click "Extract." Windows extracts the files to the Animated Fire directory and opens the folder in a new window.

    • 4

Press and hold the "Ctrl" key; click on "Equalizer," "Equalizer2" and "Mosaic." Right-click the selected files and select "Copy." Navigate to the "C:\Users\[Your Username]\.gimp-2.6\gimpressionist" folder.

    • 5

Double-click the "Presets" folder. If there's no Presets folder in the directory, click "File" and "New," select "Folder," type "Presets" and press "Enter." Press "Ctrl" and "V" simultaneously to paste the files into the Presets folder.

    • 6

Return to the Animated Fire directory that you created. Click the "AnimatedFire.scm" file and press "Ctrl" and "C" simultaneously. Navigate to "C:\Users\[Your Username]\.gimp-2.6\scripts." Paste the ".scm" file into this directory.

    • 7

Launch GIMP. Open the "Filters" menu and select "Animation." Click "Animated Fire" to run the script.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can safely deleted the temporary "Animated Fire" directory that you created after you've copied the files to their respective directories.
