How to Make Baby Shoes with Slip-Proof & Flexible Soles

Babies have sensitive feet which need to be protected. Shoes offer both warmth and protection for your baby’s feet, but they should also be flexible and comfortable and have non-slip soles to prevent injuries. Leather is a flexible material that will allow your baby’s feet to breath and you can make slip-proof and flexible soles from it.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a pattern for your baby’s shoes. The pattern you select is determined by the design you prefer. Use the same pattern for the upper part of the shoes, back heel pieces and soles.

    • 2

Measure the length of your baby’s foot from her heel to the toes. Take measurements for both feet. Add 1/2 inch to the measurements.

    • 3

Trace the pattern on the wrong side of your piece of soft leather using the measurements from Step 2. Trace pieces for two upper parts, two soles and two back heel pieces.

    • 4

Cut out the patterns you have traced on the leather using the scissors as precisely as possibly.

    • 5

Cut slits in the upper pieces. You will use the slits to pass the elastic through.

    • 6

Secure the right upper part to the right sole using the paper clips and washable glue stick. Repeat this step for the left upper part and left sole. The leather side of the upper parts should be matched to the suede side of the soles. This will allow the high-quality leather side of the upper parts and the nonskid suede part of the soles to face out when you turn out the baby shoes.

    • 7

Sew the sides of the joined right shoe pieces. Repeat this step for the joined left shoe pieces.

    • 8

Place the knitting needle on the right back heel piece and fold the leather over it. Sew along the fold to make a casing to insert the elastic. Repeat this step for the left back heel piece.

    • 9

Insert the elastic through the casing on both the right and left back heel.

    • 10

Baste the right shoe back heel piece along the right shoe sole and hold it in place with paper clips. Repeat this step for the left shoe back heel piece.

    • 11

Attach the right shoe back heel to the right sole. Repeat this step for the left shoe back heel.

    • 12

Pull one end of the elastic in the casing on the right shoe and pass it through the slits you made on the upper part of the shoes. Stretch the elastic and trim it. Overlap the ends of the elastic and stitch them together. Repeat this step for the left shoe.

    • 13

Trim off the seam allowance along the shoes and turn them out.
