How to Sew Sequin Roses

How to Sew Sequin Roses thumbnail
Make a rose with sequins and seed beads.

Sequin roses are made by sewing stacks of sequins and seed beads to a piece of fabric. These roses can be sewn straight on to a piece of clothing as a sparkling embellishment, or onto a piece of scrap fabric and cut out. Attach sequin roses to hair clips, bobby pins and headbands to create a hair accessory. Turn your sequin rose into a brooch by gluing a pin to its backside. Pin your sequin rose to clothing, purses and hats.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the two rings of an embroidery hoop. Lay a piece of fabric right side up over the bottom ring. Place the top ring on top of the fabric and push it down around the bottom ring. Pull on the edges of the fabric to make it taught. Tighten the embroidery hoop around the fabric.

    • 2

Thread a sewing needle with thread that matches the color of flower you are going to make. Pull on the thread's ends to make them even. Tie the two ends of thread together into a knot.

    • 3

Insert the needle through the backside of the fabric at the point where you want the center of the flower to be. Pull the needle and thread through the fabric until the knot catches at the back.

    • 4

Thread two seed beads onto the needle. Thread one concave sequin onto the needle with the cupped side toward the needle's eye. Thread a second concave sequin onto the needle, positioning the cupped side towards the point of the needle. Thread on a third seed bead. Add a sequin with the cupped side toward the needle's eye and another sequin with the cupped side toward the needle's pointed end.

    • 5

Push the beads and sequins down the needle and thread until they are resting on the fabric in a stack. Insert the needle back through the fabric 1/4 to 1/8 inch away from the point where the thread is protruding from the fabric. Pull the needle and thread through the backside of the fabric until the stack of beads are pull tight. These beads are the first petal of the flower.

    • 6

Push the needle up through the fabric near the center point of the flower. Thread the same combination of beads and sequins on the needle as before. Push them down the thread until they are resting on the fabric. Push the needle back through the fabric at a point beside the first petal, 1/4 to 1/8 inch away from the center of the flower.

    • 7

Repeat this process until you have create five to eight flower petals in a circle. End with the needle and thread protruding from the backside of the fabric. Tie a knot in the thread and cut the excess thread with scissors.
