How to Open Lace Crochet
Once you've mastered the single, half-double, double and triple crochet stitches, you can try your hand at open lace. Crochet lace patterns range from the simple to the very complicated, but they all have one thing in common: they use chain stitches between regular stitches to create an open mesh. Crocheters who are new to lace can try a V-stitch mesh pattern. This open lace stitch gets its name from the fact that the stitches sit side-by-side but slant away from each other, like the sides of a letter V.

1
Chain a multiple of three stitches, plus two extra. For example, if you want a 15-stitch-wide piece, chain 17 stitches.
-
2
Double crochet into the third chain from the loop on the hook.
-
-
3
Chain one stitch. Double crochet again into the same stitch as before.
-
4
Skip two chains. Work another double crochet into the third chain. Chain one and double crochet into the same stitch again.
-
5
Repeat steps 3 and 4 to the end of the row, ending with a double crochet in the last chain.
-
6
Turn your work and chain one.
-
7
Double crochet, chain one and double crochet again into the first chain-one space of the previous row. This is the last chain-one you worked before you turned. Work across the row in each chain-one space.

Repeat steps 3 through 7 for the rest of the pattern to continue your open lace crochet.
