Google's Internet empire spans the globe.

Google Apps gives you the ability to administer Google products, like Google Mail, on a domain that you own. You first need to verify with Google Apps that you actually own the domain, and for that Google Apps provides you with an authentication token that you can enter at your domain's control panel. This allows you to create a new CNAME, or canonical name, for the domain name service, or DNS, and this in turn allows Google to know that the domain belongs to you and for your domain registrar to allow Google Apps access to your domain.

Instructions

Browse to the control panel for your Google Apps account. The control panel is located at "https://www.google.com/a/your_domain.com," where "your_domain.com" is the URL for your domain. Enter your Google Apps username and password. In the instructions for verification, you will receive an authentication token, which is "google-site-verification:" followed by 43 characters; copy or write down the token.

Browse to the control panel for your domain registrar. Log in with your username and password. Find the area where you can make changes to the domain's DNS records, then add a TXT record to your domain.

    • 3

Enter the information for the name of your TXT record. It will either be "@" or blank, depending on your domain registrar. Check with your registrar for specific information. Type or paste the authentication token into the "Value" field. Save the CNAME and log out of your registrar's site. It can take as long as 24 hours for the CNAME to fully propagate across the Internet.
