How to Crop Traced Items in Illustrator

After you've applied an Add Pathfinder effect to trace and merge Adobe Illustrator art, use the Crop Pathfinder effect to crop this object. Applying the Crop effect allows you to remove areas of the resulting art in practical or stylish ways. You can crop the traced object with a custom-drawn shape, circle or rectangle, for example. A crop in the shape of a square or a circle enables you to add a decorative frame, while cropping with a custom shape can transform the traced item into an eclectic logo or poster design element.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the file that contains the traced items in Adobe Illustrator by choosing "File" and "Open."

    • 2

Draw a custom shape, circle or rectangle above the traced item. Choose the Pen tool to create a custom shape, or draw the shape you need with the Ellipse or Rectangle tool.

    • 3

Position the shape you drew so that the key areas of the traced art will appear within the shape after you apply the crop.

    • 4

Select the shape you drew along and the traced items with the Selection tool.

    • 5

Click "Effect" and "Pathfinder," then crop the traced items by choosing "Crop."
