GIMP's Heal Tool pastes over blemishes and other skin imperfections.

Use GIMP, the free graphics editor, to digitally erase blemishes, wrinkles and other skin imperfections. GIMP has a Heal Tool, which is a simple way to copy a clear patch of skin and paste it over an unwanted section. The Airbrush Tool can also be used to edit facial imperfections by smoothing out the skin tone and minimizing the appearance of dark under-eye circles. Both tools can be customized to take care of as big or as little of an area as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch GIMP and open the photo you want to edit by clicking "File" and "Open." Your photo will appear in its own GIMP workbook.

    • 2

Select the "Heal Tool" in the main toolbox. Double-click and drag the tab of the "Scale" scroll-bar to the left or to the right, respectively, to decrease or increase the size of your brush. Hold down the "Ctrl" key and click over a clear patch of skin to set that area as your heal source.

    • 3

Click on a blemish, and the heal source will be pasted and blended over the blemished area. Set a new heal source at any point by pressing down "Ctrl" while you click on a new area of clear skin.

    • 4

Select the "Color Picker Tool" in the main toolbox and click down on an ideal pixel of skin representing the color you want to use when evening out your skin tone. The Foreground Color will automatically adopt the shade of the pixel you clicked on.

    • 5

Click the "Airbrush Tool" in the main toolbox, and double-click and drag the tab of the "Scale" scroll-bar to adjust the size of your brush. Double-click and drag your cursor in circular motions over small areas of skin such as targeting the forehead before sweeping under the eyes. Use the "Color Picker Tool" to change colors, as needed, as you work your way around the face.
