How to Crochet a Lion's Mane

How to Crochet a Lion's Mane thumbnail
Yarn comes in many colors; the mane you crochet can be brown and realistic or multicolored and fantastic.

Whether you need to stitch up a Halloween costume or you just feel the need to dress like a lion every once in a while, you can make your own lion’s mane by crocheting it. The crocheted loop stitch creates long eyelets of yarn that mimic a lion’s furry mane. Smooth, plied yarn will create a whimsical and cartoonish lion’s mane. If you choose a more textured, slubbed yarn, the resulting mane will appear more realistic.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain 30 stitches loosely, leaving a 20-inch tail before beginning the chain. To start the loop stitch, you have to create a row of single-crochet stitches as a foundation. Turn your work and chain one stitch. Make 24 single-crochet stitches to finish the row. Turn your work.

    • 2

Hold the working yarn in your left hand, looping it around your index finger. Insert the crochet hook into the next stitch and pull both bottom ends of the loop through that stitch. Pull the working yarn through all three loops on the crochet hook. The loop falls on the “wrong” side of the fabric. Continue crocheting this loop stitch to complete the row. Turn your work.

    • 3

Chain one stitch and single-crochet in each stitch in this row. Turn your work.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 four times. Weave the yarn along the selvedge to the center. Chain until it measures 4 inches. Cut the yarn close to the end of the chain and pull it tightly. Weave the tail from the start of the piece to the center of the selvedge and chain until it measures 4 inches. Use these two chains to tie the lion’s mane under the chin.

Tips & Warnings

  • This lion’s mane will fit an adult. To crochet a lion’s mane for a baby or child, you will need to adjust the number of stitches you cast on.

  • Once the mane is complete, try snipping each loop to make them look more like individual hairs.
