How to Change a CVN
CVN stands for "card verification number." It is a three- or four-digit security number that is located on a credit card. On most credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard or Discover, the CVN is located on the back of the card and is a three-digit number. On American Express cards, the CVN is located on the front of the card in small black font to the upper-right side of the last digit of the credit-card number. Most purchases online or over the telephone cannot be completed without verifying the purchaser's CVN number. There are many reasons you may want to change your CVN, including the misplacement or loss of a credit card.

Look on the back of your credit card for a consumer hotline you can call. If the card is not in your possession, look up your credit-card company on the Internet and find its telephone number on its website.

Dial the consumer hotline and follow the automated prompts until you reach a live agent. If speech-detection is enabled on your credit-card company's answering service, you can repeatedly say "agent" in order to reach a live person quickly.

Speak with the customer-service agent and let him know that you would like to change your CVN. He may ask why, so be ready with a reason. The agent should be happy to change your CVN number and will likely change your credit-card number, too. A new credit card will be mailed to you.

When you receive the new card, activate it. New credit cards almost always come with a sticker indicating what number you should call to activate your card.

If you want to change your CVN because your credit card has been stolen, ask about any recent charges. Also speak to your credit-card company's fraud department. The customer-service agent will be able to transfer you.
