How to Make an Ultrasonic Fogger

By modifying an Ultrasonic Cool Mist humidifier, you can create a fogger to generate a pool of mist that looks like dry-ice fog and is similar to the composition of clouds. The fogger works by changing water into microscopic droplets, which quickly evaporate into the air. Ultrasonic Cool Mist humidifiers eject cold steam from a spout at the top; they can be found in some drugstores.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the humidifier's water reservoir. Locate the air tube pointing upward; this tube carries the air that blows mist out the top of the humidifier.

    • 2

Cover the outlet of the tube with aluminum foil. Secure the foil over the opening with a rubber band.

    • 3

Use the pin to poke a 1/2-centimeter hole in the aluminum foil.

    • 4

Reassemble the humidifier. Turn it on to a high setting. A pool of white fog will be generated and overflow the top of the humidifier. This fog, which is mist, is composed of suspended water droplets.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are a wealth of activities you can do with a fogger. For example, catch the mist generated by the fogger in a dark-painted bowl, fill cups with it and pour it on the table. Make smoke rings with it and blow it out of cardboard tubes.

  • Poking smaller holes in the foil will provide denser mist, with less rate of flow.

  • Change the water often. If you allow bacteria to grow in stale water in the fogger, the machine will create invisible clouds of bacteria.

  • Turning a humidifier into a fogger might cause the humidifier to overheat and stop working.
