How to Make Shorties From a Wool Sweater

Wool shorties keep your baby's diaper area covered.

Natural fibers are the best fabrics to have close to one’s skin. Wool is no exception. It breathes easier, and is less likely to irritate delicate skin, especially when worn over a child’s diaper. Transform an old sweater of your own, or one from second hand, into soaker shorties to cover your child’s diaper area and to keep him warm and dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your sweater in warm water, then dry it at a high temperature. This should cause the sweater to felt and to form a thicker knit.

    • 2

Measure and cut an 8-inch-by-16-inch rectangle in the sweater. Fold the rectangle in half. Measure 2 1/2 inches on both sides from the corners of the folded end of the square. Cut the corners off the square at this 2 1/2-inch mark using a diagonal cut. This will have created leg holes and a crotch region.

    • 3

Sew both sides of the rectangle from the new cut up to the open edge using a 1/2-inch seam.

    • 4

Cut the cuffs off the arm of the sweater about 1 inch from the cuff. Insert the cuffs into the body of the shorts, lining up the raw edge above the cuff with the edge of the leg opening of the shorts. Sew the opening with first a 1/4-inch seam, then with a 1/8-inch seam.

    • 5

Fold the top of the shorts down 1 inch. Sew it, leaving a 1-inch opening. Measure the waist of the shorts, then subtract 1/2 inch from that figure.

    • 6

Cut elastic to the length you've just figured. Insert the elastic, then sew the hole closed, being sure to sew the two ends of the elastic together as well. Turn the project right side out.
