Instructions

    • 1

Learn to sew if you do not know how already. Take a beginning sewing class at your local community center or community college. Practice sewing until you are comfortable working a sewing machine, know the various stitches and can create simple pieces of clothing.

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with child sizes. Different from adults, child sizes are usually according to age and are likely labeled 2T, 3T and 4T, for two-, three- and four-year-olds.

    • 3

Study the different fabrics and differentiate between the ones that are best for little kids and those that are not. For example, kids do well with cotton, however silk or satin will likely be stained and ruined. Visit a fabric store and discuss fabric choices with an experienced salesperson to determine the best choices for toddler clothing.

    • 4

Determine the styles of clothing that work best for tiny tykes on-the-go. For example, little girls may be uncomfortable in clothing that is too restricting or tight. Simple dresses, pull-on cotton pants and tops possibly decorated with ballerinas or flowers, for example, may be better received.

    • 5

Start with sewing one piece of toddler clothing, such as a dress, to practice with. Ask for assistance as you progress through the project, if needed; sewing instruction is available online through various sewing websites.

    • 6

Take sewing lessons or classes to progress your skills and learn advanced toddler clothing techniques, such as to make party dresses. Sewing classes are usually available at community colleges. If not, ask the salespeople at your local fabric store to recommend a class or private instructor.
