How to Make Illustrator Previews

An array of preview formats can be created in Illustrator.

Illustrator is a vector graphics editor developed by Adobe Systems. The good news is when you work in Illustrator, you work in a color preview mode by default. However, say you want to make your own preview for the sake of viewing your work in greater detail. This is commonly known as a “wireframe preview,” and if you can work in Illustrator, you'll find it's not difficult to make one.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "View" menu at the top of the screen in Illustrator. Click the “Outline” option to view your Illustrator image in outlines.

    • 2

Click “View” again, followed by “Preview” to return to the color preview form. You can bounce back and forth between the preview modes by using the keyboard shortcut of “Command" plus "Y” on a Mac or “Ctrl + Y” on a Windows PC.

    • 3

Click on the “Layers” panel. Hold the “Command” or “Ctrl” key and click the eye symbol next to a layer. This makes a preview that consists of only the selected layer in outline mode. The rest of the layers will remain in color mode. Hold the “Command” or “Ctrl” key and click the eye symbol to return to the color preview format.

    • 4

Press the “Option” and “Command” buttons on Mac or “Alt” and “Ctrl” on PC, and again click on the eye symbol in the Layers panel to view all unselected layers in a new outline preview mode. Repeating this process will return unselected layers to the color preview format.

    • 5

Click “Save As” to name and save all of your preview modes in Illustrator. You can make as many previews as you wish, and Illustrator allows you to view each as you create it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save your work often by hitting "Ctrl" plus "S" when using Windows PC, or "Command + S" when using a Mac.
