How to Become a Licensed & Board-Certified Hair Stylist in Maryland

In Maryland and several other states, there are a few ways to go about starting your career as a hair stylist. You will need a certificate of registration to cut, trim, style, color, perm and straighten the hair of both male and female clients. The state of Maryland requires either 1,500 hours of cosmetology classes through schooling or 24 full months of apprentice training.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide whether to attend classes or work as an apprentice in a salon. Some people learn better in a formal classroom setting, while others learn better in a work environment.

    • 2

Contact beauty schools in Maryland to learn how you can apply to their courses if you want to attend classes. Popular cosmetology schools offering professional training in Maryland include the American Beauty Academy, Blades School of Hair Design and the Aspen Beauty Academy of Laurel.

    • 3

Visit salons and speak to the owner or manager about apprenticeship positions, if this is your preference. Assess the friendliness of the hair stylists and owners as well and the atmosphere of the salon, and then choose among the offers you receive.

    • 4

Apply for the Maryland Cosmetology Apprentice License, which you can access online though the Maryland Department of Labor. You must be at least 17 years old and must have completed ninth grade.

    • 5

Begin training through apprenticeship work or through beauty school. Once you have finished at least 24 months of apprenticeship work or 1,500 hours of classroom work, you may apply for Maryland’s State Board of Cosmetologists Licensing Examination.

    • 6

Take the exam. At the time of publication the cost is $80 for both the practical and theory components. Apply for your license. The fee at the time of publication is $25 for a new license or a renewal.
