How to Sew Seams on Canvas Awnings
An awning can provide shade for a porch or an outdoor restaurant patio. Awnings can be made of fabric, wood or metal. Fabric awnings are almost always made with canvas because it is strong and durable enough to withstand inclement weather. While canvas awnings can be time consuming to make, sewing them is actually relatively simple. If the roll of canvas you buy isn't wide enough to cover your space, you will have to sew two pieces of fabric together.
Things You'll Need
- Heavy duty industrial sewing machine
- Canvas
- Fabric shears or hot knife
- Heavy duty thread
- Straight pins or basting tape

1
Cut the first piece of canvas to the desired length of your awning using fabric shears or a hot knife. Cut a second piece of canvas to the same length. Lay the fabric pieces down so they are parallel to one another, and measure the exact width of the awning you want. Allow an extra inch of fabric for the seam allowance. Cut off the remainder of the fabric with fabric shears or a hot knife.

2
Flip over both pieces of canvas so the wrong sides are facing up. Lay one piece of canvas on top of the other piece to create a one-inch overlap. Use straight pins or basting tape to hold in place.

3
Place the two attached pieces of fabric vertically onto the sewing machine with the wrong side of the fabric still facing up. Sew down the center of the overlap using a straight stitch. Reverse your stitch slightly at the end to secure.

4
Flip the fabric over and sew vertically down the overlap again. However, this time sew directly up against the raw edge. Reverse your stitch slightly at the end to secure. You should now have two lines of straight stitches that create a seam that is secure and durable.
