How to Make Ghost Work Across Subnets

Symantec Ghost is a disk cloning and imaging software application developed for administrators to back up disk drives. If you want to use Symantec Ghost over your entire local area network, you may find it time-consuming to perform tasks on each individual computer. Therefore, it is useful to use the Ghost Console to apply tasks over your network. The Ghost Console uses two separate methods to, automatically, find other networks. First it runs a multi-cast method checking if DHCP is enabled, for automatic computer name recognition. If it fails with the multi-cast it uses the WINS method to search over the subnet for all connected machines.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Symantec Ghost Console from the Start menu. On the left will be a list of connected computers, but the rest of the Ghost interface will look the same as the non-Console version. This automatically works across subnets. You are now free to create whatever tasks you want.

    • 2

Create a scheduled task, for example, by selecting the computer, then "File," then "New," and then "Task." Select the Software and File Actions, then click "Add," then "Execute a command" and then "Next." Type the command line code you want to schedule, click "Next," then "Finish" and then "Save."

Close the Ghost Console when you are done.
