Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Choose a theme for your bucket. Clip and gather any paper, fabrics, photos and scraps that coordinate with your theme. Use decorative scissors to create intricate edges around your clippings.

    • 2

Sand down any rough patches on the bucket’s surface. Clean the smooth surface with soap and water. Wipe with a vinegar and water solution. Add color by spray painting the inside and the rim of your bucket. Allow to dry.

    • 3

Using the foam brush, apply glue in an up-and-down motion. Work carefully and slowly to avoid mistakes.

    • 4

Arrange your paper scraps, fabric and images over the prepared surface and cover the entire surface with another layer of glue. Allow time to dry between coats.

    • 5

Smooth with a brayer to eliminate any air bubbles. Remove extra glue with a damp cloth or sponge.

    • 6

Use a metallic craft pen for accentuating outlines and adding intricate details. Allow time to dry. Use a hot glue gun to embellish the dry and decorated surface with fake flowers, ribbon, rhinestones, fringe and buttons.

    • 7

Finish the project with a clear water-based varnish or use an oil-based varnish for a yellow antique look. Allow to dry overnight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for affordable galvanized buckets in hardware shops and flea markets. Apply extra coats of glue when working with thicker materials. If your surface is too old or too delicate to wash, wipe it with a dry, clean cloth. Avoid wear-and-tear by using your decoupaged buckets for decorative purposes only.

  • When painting, remember to keep the room well-ventilated or work outside.
