How to Merge Shapes in Keynote

One of the quickest ways to add graphics or emphasis to an object on a Keynote slide is to utilize the "Shapes" tool in the application tool bar. Keynote provides 15 ready-made patterns such as arrows, triangles, stars and a quote bubble in addition to a freehand pen tool that should provide you with all the shape options you need. If you would like to make a customized shape out of existing patterns available in the software you can merge or join two or more shapes together.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a new Keynote slide presentation. Select a theme design from the design templates or choose a plain white background. Click the "Choose" button to proceed.

    • 2

Click on the green "Shapes" icon in the application bar. Select a shape from the pull-down menu. Select the fill color and stroke or outline of the shape from the "Colors" palette in the application bar.

    • 3

Click again on the "Shapes" icon and select another shape. Make it the same color as the first shape if you want the two shapes to completely blend together.

    • 4

Click on one shape. Notice the bounding box with eight anchor points around the shape. Drag the shape to the other shape to create your design. The anchor points help align the shape in the position you want and "snap" to each other.

    • 5

Shift-click the first shape holding down the "Shift" key while you select the second shape. Select "Arrange" from the menu, then scroll down to "Group" to merge the shapes together. One bounding box will encompass the grouped shapes. You can move, re-size or edit the shape as needed.
