How to Make a Rainforest Diorama for Kids

A diorama provides a fun way for kids to learn about a particular subject. For example, when a child creates a rainforest diorama, he must learn about the parts of a rainforest, including the trees and animal life. You can find many of the components you need to build a diorama in your house or at the toy store. Create the diorama with your child. Take time to discuss the components as you create them so that you provide your child an understanding of what he is building.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the shoe box up so that one of the long sides is the base. Draw and color a stream of water from one of the back corners to the diagonal front corner. Alternatively, use blue ribbon and glue it to the box.

    • 2

Arrange the trees around the stream. You'll need tall trees that create the canopy of the forest, medium trees that create the understory and small trees and shrubs to create the ground cover. Glue the bottoms to the box.

    • 3

Place grass from your yard among the trees. Buy tinsel from the craft store as a substitute. Otherwise, don't put the grass in until just before the diorama goes on display.

    • 4

Place the animals between or on the trees. Print a list of jungle animals from the Internet and use animals from that list that correlate with the jungle you've created if it's modeled after a real jungle. Buy animal miniatures or draw them and glue them to the wall. These might include monkeys, parrots, alligators, cougars and snakes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hang bird miniatures from the roof of the box with some fishing line.
