Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Measure the distance between the side seams on the back of the panties.

    • 2

Cut six 1-inch-wide fabric pieces that are twice as long as the back measurement.

    • 3

Sew the pieces using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Do not back-stitch at the beginning or end of the pieces. Trim the threads so there is at least 1 inch of thread at the end of the each piece.

    • 4

Pull the threads at the end of the pieces slowly. The fabric will start to gather. Push the gathers towards the opposite end of the piece as you pull the thread. Continue pulling the thread until the piece is half its original size.

    • 5

Press the ruffles with an iron to set the stitches.

    Sewing

    • 6

Pin one ruffle to the back of the panties on the bottom where you want the ruffles to start.

    • 7

Sew the ruffle to the panties using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Hold the fabric firmly so you don't move the gathers as you sew. Back-stitch at the beginning and end of the ruffles to keep the stitches from unraveling.

    • 8

Sew the remaining ruffles to the panties one by one. Consider overlapping the ruffles to create a fuller look. Trim loose threads and press once you have finished sewing.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may need to use more than six ruffles, depending on the size and style of the garment you are decorating.

  • Use fabric in a contrasting color or prints, if desired.

  • Protect your work surface with a thick towel or ironing board when using the iron.

  • Use the appropriate fabric setting on your iron to prevent scorching your garment.
