How to Frame a Picture in GIMP

The GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP, is an open-source image editor that may be downloaded for free from Gimp.org. Although it's free, GIMP performs many of the same functions as higher-end graphic editing programs. Like commercial graphics programs, GIMP utilizes layers to create images. Use layers in GIMP to create a frame for an existing picture.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Windows Explorer. Right-click on the picture that you want to frame in GIMP, then click “Open With.”

    • 2

Click the “GIMP” option in the context menu. The image opens in the GIMP image editor.

    • 3

Click the “Add Layer” button in the Layers panel. The New Layer dialog box opens with the existing dimensions of your image.

    • 4

Type new values into the “Height” and “Width” input boxes; add at least a few pixels to the height and width. This action creates a layer that is slightly bigger than the picture. This layer will become your new background layer.

    • 5

Click the “Foreground Color” option to make the frame your current Foreground color, or click the “Background Color” radio button to make the frame layer your current Background color.

    • 6

Click “OK" to create the new layer.

    • 7

Drag the new layer to the bottom of the Layers list to set the new layer as the frame.
