How to Make Vintages in GIMP

How to Make Vintages in GIMP thumbnail
GIMP can turn digital pictures into antique-looking images.

The free graphics editor GIMP has an Old Photo filter, which digitally lends a vintage appearance to ordinary pictures. Upload to your computer any image you want to transform, and use GIMP to make the change. The decorative filter lets you decide border size and gives you creative control over your image quality and color, from sharpness to sepia tone.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch GIMP and open the photo you want to antique by clicking "File" and "Open."

    • 2

Select the Filters tab and click "Decor." Click "Old Photo," and a settings dialog appears to guide you through implementing the vintage effect.

    • 3

Check the "Defocus" option if you want to blur your photo, and check the "Sepia" box if you want to recolor the image using brown tones. Adjust the border size as desired by inserting a numeric value in units of pixels into the corresponding field. Click "OK" to close the settings dialog and to complete the effect.

    • 4

Save your vintage photo by clicking "File" and "Save As."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you insert the effect and end up disliking the border size you chose, click "Edit" and "Undo Old Photo" to remove the vintage look and to start again.
