How to Make Flower Arrangements Using a Styrofoam Ball

Create a rainbow-like flower ball from silk flowers of every color.

Create beautiful hanging decorations from silk flowers and a Styrofoam ball in the size of your choice. Make the floral decorations to enhance the décor at a wedding reception from the same flowers used in your bridal bouquet and other wedding flowers, or use a variety of different colors to brighten up a simple birthday celebration at home. The floral decorations can also be used as table centerpieces, rather than hanging ornaments, if you prefer.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the individual flowers from the silk flower bunches. Trim each stem to a length of about 1 inch.

    • 2

Lay the Styrofoam ball on a clean, level surface. Puncture a hole into the Styrofoam, about 1-inch deep, with a toothpick.

    • 3

Hold the nozzle of the hot glue gun over top of the hole in the Styrofoam ball and squeeze a tiny amount of glue into the Styrofoam.

    • 4

Push the stem of one flower into the hole as far as it will go.

    • 5

Make another hole in the Styrofoam with a toothpick, near the first hole, fill it with glue and slide another stem into the ball. Repeat to cover the entire ball with the silk flowers. Leave one small 1/2-inch square section empty.

    • 6

Cut a 12-inch-long piece of ribbon. Hold the two ends of the ribbon together and press the ends against the ball, over top of the 1/2-inch empty square. Insert a straight pin through the ribbon ends and into the Styrofoam to hold the ribbon in place. Add an extra one or two pins to help secure the ribbon if you are making a large floral ball.

Tips & Warnings

  • To fill vases or other table centerpieces with the floral balls, insert a ¼-inch wooden dowel into the 1/2-inch empty square, wrap floral tape down the dowel and insert the dowel into the vase.
