How to Break Granite to Make a Mosaic Project
A mosaic is a wonderful way to spruce up an empty wall, create a piece of artwork or embellish pottery. Any material can be used to make a mosaic, from glass to tiles to granite. Granite is a very hard rock with a crystalline texture that is used for countertops, monuments and fireplaces. Create a mosaic from this valuable material by breaking up pieces of the granite to be about one inch in diameter.
Instructions

1
Lay a plastic drop cloth flat on the dirt outside. Do not lay it over a patio or concrete.
-
2
Lay a piece of granite on the plastic.
-
-
3
Lift a sledge hammer above the shoulder of your writing hand and bring the hammer down in the center of the piece of granite, breaking the piece into bits.
-
4
Place any pieces smaller than two inches in diameter to the side. These are done and ready to become part of the mosaic.
-
5
Place one piece of the larger granite pieces in the center of the plastic, moving the others aside and out of the way.
-
6
Hit the piece again with the sledge hammer, breaking it up.
-
7
Continue to break up pieces of granite until you have enough for your mosaic.
