How to Make a Wine Bottle Lamp With Tissue Paper

Glue additional decorations on the wine bottle for your own personal touch.

While some craft projects produce a final product with aesthetic appeal but little practical functionality (i.e. handmade dolls, stitching projects and so forth), the wine bottle lamp craft can actually double as a standard house lamp. A variation of the wine bottle lamp craft involves covering the outside of the bottle with tissue paper, creating a softer lighting experience suitable for more intimate settings. Make your own tissue paper wine bottle lamp for your next romantic dinner at home.

• Warm water
• Soap
• Razor blade
• Towel
• Tissue paper
• Decoupage medium
• Paint brush
• Power drill
• Glass cutter power drill bit
• Christmas tree lights

Instructions

1. Soak the wine bottle in warm, soapy water. Allow the water to enter the inside of the bottle to remove any remaining wine.

2. Scrape off the old wine label with a razor blade. Start scraping at one of the edges and continually make your way to the other end of the label until you remove all the paper. Soak under warm soapy water again until you remove all the label glue.

3. Rinse off the bottle to remove the soap. Dry off with a towel and let the bottle stand until all the remaining water inside the bottle evaporates. Do not continue with this project until the water dries up since you have to string electrical wires into the bottle.

4. Apply a thin layer of decoupage medium to the surface of the wine bottle with a small paint brush. Next, paste on a single layer of tissue paper across the entire surface of the bottle. You can add additional tissue paper layers with another application of decoupage medium, but each successive tissue paper layer softens the light emanating from the bottle. Add additional layers according to the lighting effect you want. Allow the decoupage medium to dry after you apply the final layer of tissue paper.

5. Drill a hole into the side of the wine bottle near the base. Make the hole large enough so you can feed a string of Christmas lights through. Use a hand drill and a glass cutter drill bit to cut through the glass.

6. Gently feed a string of Christmas lights through the hole you created. A gentle feed allows the lights to push upwards towards the bottle neck. This creates an even distribution of lights inside the entire bottle. Plug the lights into an electrical outlet to test out your new tissue paper wine bottle lamp.
