How to Make a Hobo Bag With a Tie at the Top

A hobo bag that ties at the top to a stick is also called a bindle or hobo stick. It is the iconic accessory a hobo costume must have if you want people to be able to guess what you are. Although you can buy a hobo bag at a costume supply shop, it will be more authentic if you make it yourself out of materials you find in your yard and around the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a stick in your yard or around the neighborhood that is relatively straight and feels like a comfortable length and weight. Trim off any branches or leaves with a pocket knife.

    • 2

Open the bandana up and place it on a flat surface.

    • 3

Place a few rags or other stuffing material on top of the bandana. If you want to be more authentic, put things in the bandana that a hobo might carry, such as a harmonica and a few snacks. Tie the opposite corners of the bandana together to close the bag shut.

    • 4

Pull two ends of the bandana around the stick near the end and make a tight knot to secure it in place. Make another tight knot with the other two ends.

    • 5

Swing the hobo stick over your shoulder and see if it feels comfortable. Move the bag up or down the stick, if necessary, to find the best position.
