How to Crochet a Sphere

All crochet spheres start off as a circle. Stitch increases widen the circle circumference while keeping the shape flat. Once you stop these stitch increases and crochet even, the fabric curves naturally into a bowl shape. Two bowls joined together form a hollow sphere. You can stuff the sphere to create a child's toy, or leave the sphere hollow and harden it with crocheting stiffening solution for a holiday decoration. The double crochet stitch gives you a small sphere in only three rounds.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain four stitches. Double crochet into the fourth chain from the hook 11 times.

    • 2

Slip stitch into the top of the starting chain to close the round. This creates the center of the first half of your sphere.

    • 3

Chain three to begin the next round. This counts as the first double crochet stitch. Double crochet again in the same spot, and then place two double crochet stitches in each stitch around until you come back to the beginning.

    • 4

Slip stitch into the starting chain-three to end the round. You now have 24 stitches in your round and the circle circumference has increased.

    • 5

Chain three to begin the third round. Double crochet in each stitch around, maintaining the same circumference and number of stitches. This curves the crochet piece into a bowl shape.

    • 6

Slip stitch into the starting chain-three to end the round. Chain one stitch and cut the yarn to fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 1 to 6 to create the second half of your sphere.

    • 8

Thread the long yarn tail from bowl piece onto the yarn needle. Hold the two halves of the sphere together, matching stitches from the the third round.

    • 9

Stitch the halves together along the middle of the sphere. If you want to stuff the sphere, place the stuffing in when you have stitched a little more than half way around the circumference of the sphere. If you want a hollow sphere, place the water balloon inside the sphere and inflate it when you are a couple stitches from closing the seam between the two halves. Weave in all loose yarn ends when you have finished stitching.

    • 10

Submerge the hollow sphere with the balloon inside into a bowl of crochet stiffening solution until saturated. Set aside to dry. When the yarn is dry and stiff to the touch, pierce the balloon with the yarn needle. Carefully remove the deflated balloon from the sphere with a smaller crochet hook by maneuvering it between two double crochet stitches on round three.

Tips & Warnings

  • Embellish the stuffed or hollow crochet sphere with beads or fabric paint after it's complete.

  • Add a little extra sparkle to the hollow sphere by sprinkling glitter on the surface while the stiffening solution is drying.

  • A stiffened, hollow crochet sphere is delicate. Treat it as you would an empty egg shell.
