How to Sand With a CNC

A CNC belt sander consists of a bench sander with a sanding disc attached to a table and a belt sanding track. The sanding belt is on a motorized pulley and the disc or orbital sander is the finishing sander. CNC belt sanders are used for sanding down finer grains of wood. Use a CNC belt sander to finish your woodworking projects and create a professional, smooth surface on your work.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety goggles and dust mask. Move the sander table to the correct angle needed for your project. Inspect the sanding belt; it should be loose enough to move 1/2 inch at the center if you push it with your hand. If it moves more than 1/2 inch, it is too loose and you will need to adjust the belt tension on the machine. Use a wrench to tighten the bolts of the belt pulley.

Turn on the machine. Inspect your work piece to find the grain of the wood. Always sand with the grain, or in the direction that the wood grain moves in the wood. Hold the work up to the belt and press it into the belt with light, but firm pressure. For pieces longer than the machine table, sand one end, then work your way over to the other.

    • 3

Use the end drum of the sander to sand contours and inside curves on the work.

    • 4

Move the sander belt to sit upright at a 90 degree angle. Use the back of the belt to sand gradual curves into the work. Move the piece constantly while sanding to prevent burning the surface, as a sander gets hot due to friction.

    • 5

Sand circles with the disc drum. Position the work on the side of the disc that moves down towards the table, not up. Press it light against the sanding disc, and move it back and forth as you sand.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have to sand against the grain, hold the wood at an angle and slowly press it against the sander.

  • Always hold onto the work piece with a good firm grip to prevent it from flying out of your hands when it is pressed against the sander.
