Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hair. Wet hair is easier to cut than dry since waves and tangles are eliminated. Comb your hair and apply a smoothing serum to prevent frizz as it dries while you cut.

    • 2

Arrange your part as you normally wear it. Position your bangs flat on your forehead and smooth them with the comb.

    • 3

Cut layers in the front of your hair that will frame your face and help your bangs meld with the rest of your locks. On one side of the bangs, separate a section of hair about the thickness of a pencil.

    • 4

Choose the length of the shortest face framing layer you wish to cut. For example, you may wish to cut three layers in 2 inch intervals beginning at your chin. Cut the first section of hair at the desired location using your hair cutting scissors.

    • 5

Blend the layer you have just cut with the rest of your hair and prevent it from looking blunt by thinning the ends with your razor scissors. Run the razor scissors through 1 inch at the end of each layered section.

    • 6

Repeat this process on both sides of your face at 2 inch intervals until you have obtained a satisfactory number of layers.

    • 7

Thicken your bangs by combing a thin layer of hair forward over your eyes. Trap your bangs and the layer you will be adding between your middle and index finger. This will align the longer hair with your bangs so you can ensure all strands are the same length as you cut.

    • 8

Cut along the edge of your bangs, thickening them as you add another layer of hair. Continue to cut the longer hair until you have shortened it along the entire width of the bangs. Move your hand to new positions as needed to keep the longer hair even with your bangs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Razor scissors work by cutting only some of the hair they pass through, thinning it and making layers blend smoothly.

  • Thicken your bangs gradually to avoid making an error, working with layers that are about as thick as a sheet of paper and adding more until you are satisfied.

  • Ask a friend to cut your hair for you if it is difficult for you to cut it alone looking in a mirror.

  • Spray your hair with water to smooth it if it begins to dry and become frizzy while you cut.
