A bed rail is a wonderful tool for your child's safety. Especially during and just after the transition of your toddler from the crib to a toddler bed, the dimensions of the new bed will be somewhat unfamiliar. Everyone falls off the bed at one point, but there are products that can eliminate the risk, especially at such a young age. There are many types of bed rails; plastic rails that clip to the bed frame, foam rails that attach to the mattress, and foam rails that go on the mattress under the sheet. The latter is very easy to make and eliminates the risk of body parts becoming lodged in gaps between the rail and the bed. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Foam rectangle, 36 inches long and 8 inches high
  • Large spoon
  • Pencil
  • Ruler

Instructions

      Lay the foam rectangle on a table or other flat surface. Face the rectangle toward you, the length running horizontally.

      Make a pencil line on the top, along the length of the rectangle one inch from the outer edge. Use a ruler to make sure the line is straight.

      Make anther pencil line on the front face of the rectangle, one inch from the bottom of the rectangle.

      Create a straight diagonal line on each width of the rectangle connecting the ends of the lines on the front and top length of the rectangle.

      Make a dot in the center of each diagonal line.

      Draw a curved line from the top edge of the diagonal line through the center dot to the bottom of the diagonal line. Make sure the curve is smooth. The curves on either end should match.

      Carve out a curved edge from the front face of the rectangle using your spoon. Begin at the top line edge and carve downward and outward, removing the foam as you carve. Carve out a curved edge using the curved lines on the width as your guidelines. End at the straight line on the front of your rectangle.

      Rinse the foam in the bathtub or shower to remove the dust and allow it to dry.

      Place the bed rail on the mattress edge underneath the sheet.
