How to Show Tags in Thunderbird
The Mozilla Thunderbird email service can help you organize your messages. The Mail Toolbar contains a Tag menu that displays a visual cue for your messages. You can assign a color tag to categorize a message. For example, tagging messages as red for “Important” or orange for “Work” lets you see the categorized messages at a glance. Thunderbird’s Quick Filter options let you view a filtered list of tagged messages that you can then sort by tag type.

1
Open the Mozilla Thunderbird program. To do so, click its shortcut icon on your desktop or Quick Launch toolbar if you saved a shortcut in either location. Or if you're using the Microsoft Windows operating system, click the Windows “Start” button or press the “Windows” key. When the Start menu displays, type “Thunderbird” into the search field and then select “Mozilla Thunderbird” from the list that appears.

2
Click “Inbox” in the left pane to display the list of email subjects in the large pane if you have not already set your program to do this when it starts up. If you want to tag and display messages that are in a different folder, select that folder instead.

Find the Subject column in the large pane and click the message you want to tag.

Click the “Tag” button on the Mail Toolbar. A list of five color tags drops down: “1 Important,” “2 Work,” “3 Personal,” “4 To Do” and “5 Later.” You can also create new tags from this menu if you want to sort your messages into different categories.

Click the preferred tag for the message. The text on the message line displays the selected tag color. For example, the “1 Important” tag makes the text red on the subject line of the tagged message. The opened message displays the tag label with the tag’s background color, such as red for “1 Important.”

Filter the tagged messages by clicking the “Tags” button in the Quick Filter menu at the top of the large pane. The tagged messages sort on a new screen. To return to the unfiltered inbox or folder, click the “Tags” button again.

Tips & Warnings
You can right-click each message line in the inbox or folder to display a list of options for that message. Point at the “Tag” option to display the list of tag labels, and then click the preferred tag.
If the “Tag” button and the Mail Toolbar are not visible, right-click the menu bar near the top of the screen and then click to place a check mark next to the Mail Toolbar. This toolbar displays the menu bar.
Tags can also be removed by clicking the tagged message, opening the Tag menu and clicking “0 Remove All Tags.” To remove tags from two or more messages, click the first message in the group, press the “Shift” key and then click the last tagged message in the group. The selected lines appear highlighted. When you remove tags, the text returns to the black default color.
