How to Make a Felt Monkey

How to Make a Felt Monkey thumbnail
Many children enjoy monkey toys.

Felt animals are simple to make from basic shapes. You can use a felt animal to embellish a craft project or you can use felt animals as toys for children. Because felt is easy to glue and requires no hemming or sewing, making felt animals is a suitable project for children. A monkey is a good choice for a felt animal because it is often considered a mischievous or whimsical animal a child will enjoy.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two small circles, one large circle, one large oval, four small ovals and one S-shaped piece from dark brown felt. From the light brown felt, cut three small circles and one large oval. The light brown pieces must be smaller than the dark brown pieces.

    • 2

Glue the large dark brown circle to the top of the large dark brown oval at one of the narrow ends. This is the monkey's head. Glue the two small dark brown circles to the top of this large circle for ears. Be sure to make these circles small or your monkey may look more like a mouse.

    • 3

Glue two of the small, dark brown ovals to the top of the large oval, under the circle, to make arms. Glue the other two to the bottom of the oval for legs. Glue the S-shaped piece to the back of the oval for a tail.

    • 4

Glue a light brown circle inside of each of the monkey's ears. Glue the last one to the circle for the head, toward the bottom of the circle. Glue the light brown oval inside of the dark brown oval for the monkey's tummy.

    • 5

Decorate the monkey. You can draw on a face with fabric paint, add clothing with more felt pieces or add a face with googly eyes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have a monkey, there are many things you can do with it. You can trace the monkey on dark brown felt, cut out the shape, put some stuffing between the two pieces and sew them together to make a stuffed toy. You can put a horizontal strip of brown felt across the back to make a puppet. You can also cover a board with felt or flannel, then make more monkeys or felt animals, which will stick to the flannel and enable a child to play by moving the animals about the flannel board.
