How to Crochet a Sunflower Afghan

• 16 ounces coffee colored, medium weight wool
• Size J crochet hook
• 3 ounces pumpkin colored, medium weight wool
• 5 ounces gold colored, medium weight wool
• 10 ounces green, medium weight wool
• 20 ounces cream, medium weight wool
• Yarn needle

Instructions

1. Chain five using your coffee colored yarn. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Chain one, single crochet 12 around. Join with a slip stitch. Chain four. Skip the first stitch. Loop the yarn over the hook and draw up a loop three times in the same stitch. Repeat through seven loops on the hook. This will be referred to as a puff stitch throughout the pattern. Chain one. Double crochet one, chain one. Repeat from the first puff stitch five times. Work one puff stitch, chain one, join with a slip stitch. Fasten off.

2. Join the pumpkin-colored yarn. Chain one. Single crochet, chain three and single crochet in each puff stitch across. Single crochet in the next chain space. Single crochet, chain three, single crochet in the next stitch, single crochet one and repeat around. Fasten off. Join the gold-colored yarn and chain one. Single crochet, chain four, yarn over twice, draw up a loop through the space, yarn over and draw through two loops on the hook twice. Repeat two more times, yarn over and draw through the four remaining loops on the hook. Chain four, then single crochet. Fasten off.

3. Join the green yarn. Yarn over twice, draw up a loop through the space, yarn over and draw through two loops on the hook twice. Repeat two more times, yarn over and draw through the four remaining loops on the hook. Chain one. Single crochet, chain five and repeat five times. Chain one. Single crochet. Work three single crochets, chain two, single crochet three. Repeat 12 times. Chain one. Single crochet one. Chain four. Work four triple crochet stitches in the same stitch and drop the loop from the hook. Insert the hook into the top of the first triple crochet and pull the loop through.

4. Join the cream-colored yarn. Chain one. Single crochet one, chain three, single crochet one, chain two. Double crochet, chain one and double crochet in the next stitch. Chain two. Single crochet, chain one, single crochet, chain two, double crochet, chain one and double crochet in the next stitch and chain two. Repeat around. Slip stitch, chain three, work two double crochets, chain two, work three double crochets, all in the first chain. Work three double crochets in the next stitch. Double crochet three in the next chain, and repeat. Work three double crochets, chain two, double crochet three.

5. Slip stitch, chain three, work two double crochets, chain two and work three double crochets. Work three double crochets, chain two, three double crochets and repeat around. Fasten off. Join the coffee-colored yarn. Chain three. Work two double crochets, chain two and work three double crochets. Work three double crochets, chain two, double crochet three and repeat around. Fasten off. This completes one square of the afghan. Repeat the first five steps 23 more times.

6. Chain 233 using your cream colored yarn. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Chain one, skip two stitches and single crochet the next stitch. Single crochet, chain two, skip two, single crochet one and repeat 57 times. Chain five, work three double crochets, chain two, work three double crochets and repeat across. Fasten off.

7. Join the coffee-colored yarn. Chain three. Double crochet two, chain two and double crochet three in the next stitch. Double crochet three, chain two and double crochet three in the next stitch and repeat across. Fasten off. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 two more times. These are the middle strips of the afghan.

8. Sew the 24 squares together into four strips of six squares each. Sew one middle strip between each strip of squares. Single crochet stitch to attach each section of the afghan together and around the outside border.
