How to Change a Canon Pixma MP160 from Color to Black-and-White for Printing

The Canon Pixma MP160 requires Canon FINE ink cartridges for the best printing results. If your color cartridge runs out, or you want to preserve the color ink, you can configure the printer to a black-and-white print cycle. Black-and-white printing requires plain paper and will disable the borderless printing feature. The black-and-white printing setting will remain active until you manually return it to color printing using the same procedure.

Windows Instructions

  • Click the orb in the lower left corner of your desktop to launch the "Start" menu. Choose "Devices and Printers."

  • Right-click the Pixma MP160 icon in the printer listing. Select "Printer Properties." Click the tab labeled "Maintenance."

  • Click "Ink Cartridge Settings" in the Maintenance window. Choose the "Black Only" option and click "OK."

Mac Instructions

  • Open the "Applications" directory then access the "Utilities" section. Launch "Print Center" from Utilities.

  • Double-click the Pixma MP160 icon. Choose "Utility." Click the printer in the list that appears then click "Maintenance."

  • Select "Ink Cartridge Settings" in the drop-down box. Choose "Black Only" then click "OK." Close any remaining dialog box windows.
