How to Disable Referral on Yahoo! Videos

Yahoo! indexes many types of content, including audio and video files and refers visitors to this content when they enter relevant keywords into the Yahoo! search engine. If you want to stop Yahoo! from referring people to the video clips on your website or blog, you’ll need to create a Robots text file and upload it to your site’s root folder to block access to this content.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Microsoft Notepad, WordPad or another plain text editor. Click “File” followed by “New” to open a new document.

    • 2

Type “User-agent: Yahoo-MMAudVid” as the top line of the blank document. Click “Enter” or “Return” on your computer keyboard.

    • 3

Type “Disallow: /” as the second line in the document to block Yahoo! from indexing all video files hosted on your site. If you want to block Yahoo! from indexing videos on a specific Web or blog page, rather than across the whole site, type “Disallow: /example-page.html”. Change “example-page.html” to the name of your page. The final code should look like this:

      User-agent: Yahoo-MMAudVid
      Disallow: /

    • 4

Click “File” followed by “Save As” from the main menu. Type “Robots.txt” into the File Name input field. You must use this name to ensure that the Yahoo! search engine recognizes the file and follows the instruction not to index the video files.

    • 5

Upload the Robots text file to your website’s root folder, which is the main folder containing the index page or home page for your site. Upload the file in the usual way with a File Transfer Protocol application or through the cpanel -- control panel -- of your site host’s content management system. By default, most cpanel tools and FTP applications automatically open on the root folder.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your site already has a Robots text file, add the Yahoo! disallow code below the existing text and save the file to implement the changes.
