How to Remove a Side Rail From a Crib to Make a Daybed

Some cribs can be transformed into a daybed when your toddler outgrows the crib.

Some cribs are capable of turning into several different types of beds, including a daybed. These convertible cribs allow you to make one bed purchase that can grow with your child from crib to toddler bed to daybed to full-size bed. Some of the transitions require additional kits, such as the full-sized bed, but the daybed conversion can be done with just the items that came with your crib. All you need to do is remove the side rail.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the bolts along the head and foot ends of the crib. Most cribs have at least four bolts, though some may have six.

    • 2

Remove the bolts with the Allen wrench to release the side of the crib. Be careful not to allow the side to fall onto you or anyone else as you remove it.

    • 3

Take the mattress out and set it aside.

    • 4

Loosen the screws that adjust the height of the crib bottom. Lower the bottom to its lowest setting and retighten the screws to hold it securely in place.

    • 5

Replace the mattress and make the bed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some cribs also offer a partial side rail to use with the daybed to make it more toddler friendly.

  • Store the removed side in a safe place in case you ever need the crib again or decide to sell it.
