How to Crochet Headbands With Flowers

How to Crochet Headbands With Flowers thumbnail
Crocheted headbands can be useful, fun or both.

A simple headband is a quick, easy crochet project for yourself or someone you love and crocheted flowers as embellishments add a touch of whimsy and personality. Headbands are also an ideal use for leftover yarn. Worsted weight or double knitting weight yarn work well for any headband, but if you're crocheting a headband for a baby, use fingering weight baby yarn and a smaller crochet hook. Cotton and acrylic are the best fiber choices because they are comfortable and easily washable.

Instructions

  1. Crochet the Headband

    • 1

Chain six. Work one half double crochet into the third chain from the hook and into each chain across. The first two unworked chain stitches count as one hdc, so row one has a total of five hdc. Chain two and turn your work.

    • 2

Make one hdc in each stitch across. This completes row two with five hdc. Chain two and turn your work.

    • 3

Repeat row two until the headband is as long as you need. Do not chain two or turn.

    • 4

Decide which side of the headband you want to be the right side -- both sides are suitable -- and fold the headband in half widthwise so the beginning chain edge meets the edge you just finished, wrong sides together.

    • 5

Match up the stitches and slip stitch across, through both thicknesses, to join the edges. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

    Crochet the Flowers

    • 6

Chain two and make six sc into the second chain from the hook. Join with a slip stitch. This completes round one.

    • 7

Slip stitch into the next stitch, then chain three. Repeat this pattern around and join with a slip stitch into the first slip stitch of the round. This completes round two with a total of six chain-three spaces.

    • 8

Single chain into the first chain-three space and then chain two. Work three treble crochets into the same chain-three space, chain two and work another sc into the same chain-three space. This completes a petal. Make one petal in the same way in each of the five remaining chain-three spaces. Slip stitch in the first sc of the first petal and fasten off, leaving at least a 12-inch tail.

    • 9

Repeat steps 1 through 3 for as many flowers as you would like. Use both yarn tails to sew the flower or flowers to the headband at the joined edges.

Tips & Warnings

  • For sparkle, you could stitch beads to the flower centers.

  • You could use contrasting colors for the flowers or keep them the same as the headband.

  • For a double-layered flower, work a full, three-round flower and then work another flower (in a contrasting color if you like) through round two only. Sew the smaller flower to the center of the full flower.

  • Do not use beads on a flower or headband for a child or baby, as the beads could pose a choking hazard.
