You can make 3D letters using a crochet needle and yarn.

To crochet 3-D letters, you will have to know how to crochet a basic foundation chain. You can crochet a foundation chain by making a line of stitches and tying off the end. Once you know how to make a foundation chain, you can use combinations of chains to make letters. You will also need to decide on a font to use for your letters. For example, O's can be diamond or square shaped, in addition to circles.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of your letters. For example, if you want to crochet the name "Joe" on a shirt, measure the size of the name so you can crochet the letters at the appropriate size.

    • 2

Crochet the foundation chain for the "backbone" of the letter. For example, if you're making a letter "F," you will need one long foundation chain for the vertical line and two smaller chains for the two horizontal lines. Some letters, like "J," "M," and "N" can be made from a single chain, which you must bend while stitching to the shirt.

    • 3

Bend the foundation chain into shape for letters made from one chain. For example, if you are crocheting an "M," bend the foundation chain into an "M" shape. Pull two of the stitches loose near the point where the letter bends. Take a small piece of string and make a knot around the two loose stitches. This will create a join in the foundation chain that will preserve the shape of the letter.

Lay the letters over a piece of clothing -- if you are using the letters to make personalized clothing. If the clothing you are using is also crocheted, then pull a few stitches loose from the clothing around the endpoints of each letter. For example, if you are stitching an "F" to a shirt, then pull stitches loose around the ends of the two horizontal lines and the top and bottom of the vertical lines, and then stitch the letter to the shirt. Otherwise, you will need to use a regular needle and thread.
