How to Create a Train Air Horn
Train air horns are used as warning signals on cars and trains and are some of the loudest horns available. Comprised of one or two flute-like tubes and an air compressor, these function when a large amount of air is directed through the tubes, creating a vibration that makes an intensely loud noise. A solenoid valve is an electronic device that controls the outflow of air using a switch which releases an electric current to close or open the valve. Install a solenoid valve onto your horn to control the sound output with the push of a button.
Things You'll Need
- Air horn
- 12-volt air compressor
- Solenoid air valve
- 2 pieces of rubber tubing
- Teflon tape
- 4 brass fittings
- Wrench
Instructions

1
Attach a brass fitting to one of the lengths of rubber tubing, then connect it to the air compressor using the fitting.
-
2
Install a brass fitting onto the open end of the rubber tube that has been connected to the air compressor, then attach the fitting onto the input side of the solenoid valve by screwing it into place tightly.

-
3
Install another brass fitting onto one end of the other piece of rubber tubing, then attach this piece of tubing to the output side of the solenoid valve.
-
4
Connect the remaining open end of the rubber tube so that it screws tightly onto the connection portion of the air horn.
-
5
Wrap Teflon tape around all the connections and valves to prevent slow air leaks.
