How to Make a Favicon on a Mac

How to Make a Favicon on a Mac thumbnail
A favicon can be made on a Mac using an image manipulation program.

A favicon is the small image that appears in the tab of your Internet browser that represents the website you have open in that tab. This image is a small but important part of a website's branding, as it is in a highly visible spot. Making a favicon on a Mac computer is fairly simple, as you can use the Preview program that comes with your Mac to resize the image you want to use as a favicon. You can then convert it to the .ico favicon format right from the Mac desktop.

Instructions

Find an image you would like to use as a favicon or design one in your preferred image manipulation program. Use a simple image, as it must be recognizable even when it is very small. Save the image to your Mac.

Double-click the image file to open it in the program Preview on your Mac.

Click on the name of the image file that appears below the icon of the file. Click once more to make the file name editable. Locate the file extension, which are the letters that appear after the dot at the end of the file's name. Click at the end of the file extension to move the cursor here. Backspace to erase the current file extension, then type "ico." Click on a blank space away from the image file icon. Click "OK" in the pop-up window to confirm that you want to change the file extension to ".ico" and save your image as a favicon file.
