How to Combine Five Independent Variables to Run a Regression
A multiple regression is a statistical procedure where two or more “independent” or “predictor” variables are used to predict the scores on a “dependent” or “criterion” variable. In IBM SPSS, you can enter five independent variables into the regression equation at the same time, either as a distinct analysis or as one step in a more complex analysis. The method of regression used depends on how many other variables there are to be analyzed.

Load up SPSS. In the welcome window, select “Open an existing data source,” then click “More Files.” Navigate to the folder containing your data file, then double-click it. An output window appears, confirming that the file was loaded, and your data appears in the main data view.

Click “Analyze,” “Regression” and “Linear.”

Locate your dependent variable from the list on the left. Click it once, then click the arrow next to the “Dependent” text box. The variable moves into the box.

Determine the order you wish IBM SPSS to analyze your remaining variables. If you only have the five variables you want to analyze at once remaining, select them and click the arrow next to the “Independent(s).” If you have others you want to put into the regression first, drag them into the “Independent(s)” box first, then click “Next” and drag in your five variables of interest. If you want to analyze any more variables after these five, click “Next” again and drag them into the now empty box.

Click “OK.” Wait for the analysis to complete, then scroll down until you reach the “Model Summary” table. This table gives the main output statistics of the analysis. If you used more than one block of variables, look for the labels below the table to see which row refers to which block. Here you find the “R,” “R Square” and “Adjusted R Square” statistics. You are also given “R Square Change,” which tells you the additional predictive power provided by each block at each step.
